  • Is Manual Osteopathy Regulated in Alberta? Here's Why You’re Still in Good Hands at Complete Function

"At Complete Function Healing Center, we recognize that Manual Osteopathy and our other services are not yet provincially regulated in Alberta, and likely will not ever be. While this may raise questions, we want to offer clarity and assurance: our care is not only safe and deeply informed—it is uniquely integrative, evidence-aware, and rooted in collaborative clinical ethics."

Why Complete Function Is a Trusted Partner in Care

1. Multidisciplinary Foundations Grounded in Movement Science

All of our practitioners are trained beyond osteopathic principles. Our team is built on a strong foundation of:

  • Kinesiology and movement analysis

  • Rehabilitative principles from physical therapy

  • Spinal and postural alignment drawn from chiropractic models

  • Neurosomatic regulation and autonomic reset techniques

Our founder Neil Wilson spent over eight years working within Alberta’s Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) provider centers, where he integrated kinesiology into physiotherapy lead rehabilitation programs.

He also served for five years on the Regulatory Guidance Board for Professional Kinesiology, helping shape provincial direction for the profession. That same strategic foundations to influence the Alberta Kinesiology Association to this day—15 years later without progress or regulatory movement.

This direct experience within regulated healthcare systems and the support associations gave him a unique and informed perspective to which Complete Function is founded: government regulation, while often well-intentioned, is not an accurate or timely measure of practitioner competency or clinical effectiveness. In many cases, regulatory frameworks lag decades behind the real evolution of client-centered, integrative care. What these system based models taught was the importance of clinical goals, treatment protocols, and understanding where clients succeed—or stall—within conventional care pathways.

We apply that insight alongside our core competencies in Osteopathic Manual Therapy, which shares common ground with physical therapy in areas like:

  • Orthopaedic assessment

  • Functional movement analysis

  • Postural and fascial evaluations

This allows us to be different than other care centers in the community through our ability to communicate in clinical language, understand traditional rehab care plans, and work synergistically and intelligently place ourselves within the continuum of care—not separately—from existing treatment pathways. We know when to refer, when to co-manage, and when our approach can restore momentum in complex or chronic cases.

2. Guided Self-Healing: The Core of Osteopathic Care

The Osteopathic philosophy we follow is not based on force—it is based on the body’s natural ability to self-heal when barriers to motion, fluid dynamics, and nervous system flow are gently and intelligently addressed. This approach is rooted in the parasympathetic nervous system—the state where true restoration, regulation, and tissue repair can occur.

Rather than chasing symptoms or applying predetermined protocols, our practitioners assess for subtle barriers in the fascial, visceral, and fluid systems, often identifying dysfunction well before pain or organ-level pathology presents. Each session is:

  • Non-invasive and tissue-led

  • Deeply intuitive, yet grounded in anatomical and clinical expertise

  • Designed to reprogram the nervous system—not override it

Because we follow the body’s cues and respect its readiness, this method ensures:

  • Minimal risk of injury

  • Treatments guided by what the tissue reveals—not external force or agenda

  • Resolution of deeper root causes often missed by conventional “chase-the-pain” approaches

We do not push tissue—we listen to it. The tissue tells the story, and that story becomes the guide for every treatment at Complete Function. If the tissue needs the push we refer to physical therapy and/or chiropractic medicine to complete that within their scope of care.

3. Clear Scope of Practice and Referral Integrity

We do not treat acute structural injuries, mechanically unstable conditions, or post-surgical states outside our scope. Instead, we refer appropriately—often to physical therapy, chiropractic, or medical care—when structural healing or active rehabilitation is required.

When co-management is indicated, we support outcomes with:

  • Fluid and inflammation management techniques

  • Scar mobilization and fascial pattern reorganization

  • Nervous system regulation and spinal alignment support

  • Trauma-informed somatic release work when appropriate

4. We Understand the Clinical Goals—and Share Them

Because our foundation is grounded in Osteopathy, Kinesiology - Physical Therapy theory, and spinal care models, we know what traditional providers are trying to achieve. That’s why we make it easy to:

  • Coordinate on patient goals

  • Support existing rehab plans

  • Communicate clearly and consistently

We are not a detour in care—we’re often the bridge when progress stalls or patterns persist.

5. Trusted Across Central Alberta

Complete Function is a known and trusted provider for clients referred by:

  • Medical doctors

  • Physical therapists

  • Chiropractors

  • Psychologists

  • Case managers and insurers

We regularly support interdisciplinary teams, provide treatment notes on request, and respect every provider's scope in the circle of care. Our services are covered by all major extended health plans and recognized within many motor vehicle and workers’ compensation claims as an adjunct to regulated care.

6. Where We Differ—and Why It Matters

Our value lies in what we see that others often don’t. We specialize in:

  • Emotional and somatic patterning stored in the body

  • Regulation of the autonomic nervous system as the foundation for healing

  • Reading whole-body compensatory patterns, not just local dysfunction

These are critical layers in recovery, especially for clients with chronic symptoms, trauma, or unresolved tension despite quality care elsewhere.

In Summary:

We are committed to safe, effective, and collaborative healing. While our work is not regulated by the province, it is defined by clinical integrity, continuous education, and a commitment to patient outcomes. We are not unregulated in the terms of structured client care—we are highly trained, highly aware, and deeply collaborative.

If you’d like to learn more about our care model or how we can support your patients, our team is always open to dialogue, education sessions, and shared case discussions. Here's an invitation, we would love to offer you a free treatment to feel the difference our passion and care under the Osteopathic philosophy can affect change.

Thank you for supporting integrative health care and long-term patient well-being.

Warm regards,
